Construction resumes at $1 billion development in Hyde Park

Bellefield at Historic Hyde Park, a new ‘live-work-play’ project in Dutchess County, was delayed two years by the pandemic

The Hudson Valley has seen a surge of mixed-use development in recent years. In Orange County, a new apartment complex is being proposed across from the Galleria Mall. In Poughkeepsie, a $13 million dining, shopping and apartment complex known as The Academy is in the works. And in the Town of Poughkeepsie, the mixed-use Eastdale Village is now partially opened, with restaurants like Rossi & Sons welcoming customers.

But a project in Hyde Park claims to be the biggest yet in the region. Bellefield at Historic Hyde Park is a $1 billion retail, residential and recreational development in the tiny Dutchess County town. And after a two-year pandemic delay, construction is moving forward.

A version of the development was first approved by the Town of Hyde Park in 2007. After the property sat empty for years, it was purchased in 2011 from a bank by a new set of developers, the T-Rex Capital Group, who spent a few years talking to local stakeholders and organizations about what they’d like to see with the development. Two years ago, the developers went back before the planning board to amend the concept that was originally approved.
